Senegal: Clean Energy from Solar Systems

Step by step towards renewable energies

With an annual per capita income of around $ 1,000, Senegal belongs to the group of the least developed countries in the world (LDC). The country lies on the edge of the Sahel region and is strongly affected by climate change. The Federal Foreign Office estimates the proportion of people living in poverty to be more than 40 percent. Particularly in rural areas in, the necessary infrastructure is scarcely available.

Senegal has been pursuing a modernization plan since 2014 and has the goal of becoming an emerging country with its national development strategy. The required structural conditions in business and politics should be established by 2035. The expansion of renewable energies and transport routes will play an important role in this. Thus, the import of heating oil and diesel, which generate 90% of the country’s electricity and emissions from energy generation will gradually be reduced.

The first large-scale Solar-PV plants in Senegal

This project consists of two pioneer photovoltaic systems with an installed capacity of 30 MWp each. Both Solar-PV plants commissioned in 2017 and are connected to the national power grid. The project sites located near the village Méckhé in the west of the country. The excellent solar radiation conditions make it possible to expect an average annual electricity production of 50 GWh per Solar-PV plant. Hence, the two solar systems together lead to verified C02 reduction of 68,000 tons per year.
